The TXSTMA established the scholarship fund to promote the sports turf profession to students interested in turfgrass management and to assist the sports turf professional seeking to improve himself through continuing education courses, thus promoting the sports turf management profession as a career choice and the necessity of the sports turf manager as a vital position within any organization that provides sports fields.

The Dr. James McAfee Scholarship will be awarded to a student enrolled in a turf management or agronomy program, with emphasis in sports turf, at a four-year college or university. Applicants do not have to be members of TXSTMA. This scholarship is awarded based on criteria adopted from the STMA SAFE Scholarship by the TXSTMA Board of Directors.

The Cody Hobbs Scholarship will be awarded to a professional or commercial member of TXSTMA who seeks to improve his or her knowledge in the profession of sports turf management through continuing education or correspondence courses by an accredited college or university. This scholarship is awarded based on criteria established by the TXSTMA Board of Directors in which the applicant must also provide valid reasons as to why they will benefit from this award and complete the course within one year.

Scholarships are awarded at the Annual Business Meeting held each December in conjunction with the Texas Turfgrass Association Winter Conference and Exhibit.

When applying for either scholarship, applicants are asked to type a one page essay, single spaced, on 12 font size.

• Your major
• What you’re planning to do after you graduate
• What you have done or are currently doing as a student worker or summer worker
• Why you deserve the Dr. James A. McAfee Student Scholarship for Sports Turf Management.

• Your job title
• Description of your job
• Any past jobs in the industry and what you did on those jobs
• Awards you have received in the industry

• Maintenance you have to do on your field(s) during the year
• Why you deserve the Cody Hobbs Scholarship for Continuing Education.
